The artist Dragoș Pătrașcu from Iasi comes to Sibiu with an exceptional exhibition of paintings, graphics and installations. The exhibition also includes the work Sun of Innocence, the poster work of this year's Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
Dragoș Pătrașcu stands out today as a complex, mature artist who interposes the grid of a plastic intelligence focused on verisimilitude and cerebrality. He draws like an architect and dreams like a pamphleteer. Between lucidity and despair, he places a genuine awareness of time. The graphic artist Dan Erceanu, says: "That quality of the artist to be always new, fresh, a quality that Sergei Djaghilev claimed to Picasso - Amazes me, seems to be naturally Dragoș Pătrașcu's own. I have always considered that, although he still has a lot to say in his art, Dragoș Pătrașcu is already the author of an extremely rich and varied work, a work that relies on absorbing everything in a personal style.
Claiming to be part of a tradition of modern Romanian drawing, which he does not obey, Dragoș Pătrașcu is carving out a personal path that defines and consecrates him as an artist.
This exhibition contains a path thought-feeling by the author that reveals the idea of a workshop, a thread of his creative thinking, not obvious from the outside. The artist points out stages, taking as a common measure the line, the obsession of which has accompanied him since the beginning of his creation. A relentless search and passage through stages, exploring, not to reach a point, but assuming the search as a condition.
Hence the choice of the title - the Athanor, the alchemical furnace where the intimate and mysterious process of transforming base metal into precious matter (gold, according to alchemical tradition) takes place, is the artist's studio, the physical one, but also the inner place where he creates the work, carrying the studio with him, to consecrate each space in which he works - as a studio.
Athanor and because, although art is a diary, as the artist states on several occasions, the biographical is transformed into the stuff of dreams
, metaphors and symbols, personal mythologies. By reinventing form, line and surface, Dragoș Pătrașcu traces a personal path, whose drawing you will find in the exhibition.
The choice of the title justifies and goes beyond the artist's choice. From the idea of a workshop, a laboratory where line, ideas and shapes mix and unravel, to the drawings-pictures that become alchemical representations of the harmony of contrasts: red and black: cinnabar and lead, cold and hot, wet and dry. The wedding of contrasts.
Athanor is where you are, journeying towards you.
