About

Exhibition title: Bibliophile Baron - 300 years old
Curator: Radu Teuceanu PhD
Location: Cartography Cabinet, Brukenthal Palace, 4, Grand  Square, Sibiu
Duration: December 08 – December 31, 2021

The Baron Samuel von Brukenthal wanted to establish, according to the Viennese model, in the palace in the center of Sibiu, a Temple of the Muses, an elevated form of a series of values, hierarchized and destined to enjoy a great stability in time.

Brukenthal particularly valued the book from a bibliological point of view and left intact the volumes with special bindings and gilt supralibros, applied by former owners, especially aristocrats from the German-speaking space.

These are primarily books, many with engraved illustrations, from the Baroque era, more precisely from the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century. They were written in languages of European culture – Latin, German, and French, including works by ancient authors, among which translations can be found. The exhibition “The Bibliophile Baron – 300 Years” offers the public some of the most beautiful and valuable editions which the former governor of Transylvania acquired, accompanied by panels on which are reproduced some of the most spectacular book illustrations from our library.
