Text from the curator:
Very well known and appreciated for his replicas after the most influent italian masters of all time and executed with great craftsmanship, Domenico Cunego (Verona, 1726 – Rome, 1803), who had a long life and a successful carreer, is one of the most important names in the italian art history of engravings in the 18th century. This exhibition displays his works kept in the Brukenthal Museum’s collection of italian prints, respectively those for Gavin Hamilton’s series called Schola Italica Picturae, published in Rome in 1773. These engravings represent some of the most important works in Cunego’s artistic carreer. In those years he also engraved many plates after great masters such as Tizian, Giorgione, Guido Reni, Guercino, Domenichino, but also portraits of popes, which brought him a lot of fame and appreciation in the roman artistic world.
