Text provided by the curator of the exhibition:

From a cultural perspective, the eighteenth century is, for Transylvania, the century of connection to the Western pulse, a century of Baroque, pre-Enlightenment and Enlightenment. Component of the Habsburg Empire, Transylvania is individualized within it by dimensions / surface and the ethnic, linguistic, cultural and religious diversity. In a natural extension of the political, social and cultural realities of the seventeenth century, in the fascinating century of the Enlightenment, Transylvania continues to be a space of joining, but also of confluences.

On July 26th 1721, in this geo-cultural area, one of the most remarkable personalities of the time and of the Central European space was born: Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania between 1777 and 1787, who built a cultural work / model, which essentially contributed to the spiritual profile of this space.

His political, administrative, educational and especially cultural oeuvre has a magnitude and significance that cannot be presented in its entirety, in an exhibition or in a book.

Through this exhibition, organized in the year that celebrates 300 years since his birth, we bring some "readings" of his life, activity and fields of interest, through symbols and metaphors.

The exhibition is structured on the following segments: The Palace of Sibiu (Collections / unity in diversity / Decoding of the visual language of the “Royal Art” of Freemasonry), the Residence of Avrig (Aesthetic and utilitarian concept), the Residence of Sâmbăta (Aesthetic and utilitarian concept), the The utopia of the illuminist democratic ideology versus social reality, the year 1784.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to offer visitors a series of works of painting and decorative art that are either exhibited for the first time or have not been presented to the public for more than half a century.
