About
Exhibition: On the roof of Romania. Tourism and daily life on the mountain, in the beginning of the last century
Location: Cartography Cabinet, Brukenthal Palace, Grand Square No. 4
Duration: 4 – 31.12.2020
Curator: Sergiu Mihail Chideșa
Text from the curator:
First in a series dedicated to vintage mountain photography, the present exhibition aims to be a short comparative presentation between mountain tourism and the daily life of the inhabitants of the mountain areas in Romania, in the first half of the twentieth century.
The carefully selected images send our minds through time and space on the mountain, still wild and clean in beginning of the last century. With the help of our imagination, the photos transpose us in the boots of a those days tourists, on the paths of Ceahlău, Rarău, Bistra, Herculane, Bicaz and so on, where, besides the wonderful landscapes, we can meet both the locals (doing their daily chores) and other mountain enthusiasts.
The unique photos presented on display were processed at the studio of Sibiu photographer Emil Fischer, in the first half of the twentieth century, and are part of a collection of over 8.000 items (illustrating various themes), curated today by the Brukenthal National Museum’s specialists.
