5 Autumn Hikes


Autumn colours are in full bloom in Sibiu! We are very much looking forward to enjoying the landscapes around, even if the air is chillier and starting to smell like snow. While browsing for hiking routes, we found an article about 5 routes fit for walking, cycling, or running, for all ages and preferences. Thank you to (c)Răzvan Morariu for the text and pictures.

1. Dumbrava

This is a circular route with no significant elevation going through the Dumbrava Forest. The route is recommended even on windy and slightly rainy days, as the trees provide protection from the elements. The entire route goes through the forest, offering a special natural landscape, and is fit for jogging, walking, or mountain biking.

● Distance: 5 km
● Elevation: 30 m
● Level: beginners and children
● Activities: walking, MTB, jogging

The bike track

The bike track is a circular route with no significant elevation going through the Dumbrava Forest. This route is recommended even on windy and rainy days, as the forest provides enough protection from the elements. The route runs only on unmetalled paths, offering a special natural landscape and is fit for jogging, walking or mountain biking, even in winter.

● Distance: 16.6 km
● Elevation: 130 m
● Level: medium (adults and children over 7)

3. Cioran

This is a circular route going through the Dumbrava Forest and the woods at the foot of the Cindrel mountain all the way to Rășinari, at the Emil Cioran memorial house, hence its name. This trail is recommended to people who cycle and children able to walk for 2-3 hours. The route mostly travels through unmetalled trails in a special natural landscape and is great for jogging, walking or mountain biking.

4. Hammersdorf (Gușterița)

This is a circular route going through the forest of Gușterița and along the path of the eponymous competition. This trail is recommended to people who cycle and children able to walk for 2‑3 hours. It is made up of unmetalled paths going through a special natural landscape and is great for jogging, walking and mountain biking.

● Elevation: 250 m
● Level: medium (adults and children over 7)
● Activities: walking, MTB, jogging

5. Măgura Cisnădiei

This route goes through the Dumbrava Forest, the woods at the Cindrel foothills and up the peak Măgura Cisnădiei, over 1,300 m high. This route is recommended to experienced hikers or bikers. The route travels across unmetalled, partially technical trails, with a challenging descent, offering a wonderful view over the northern part of the county, the Făgăraș, Lotru, and Cindrel mountains. It’s great for MTB.

● Elevation: 1,000 m
● Level: advanced, technical descent
● Activities: MT
