History begins with people. Their decisions influence how things happen. Should we fight? Should we leave? Where can we settle? What shall we do? Who are our allies? Should we stay? How long can we put up with this situation? Where people settle, buildings and walls appear. Walls separate, protect, shelter and encourage development. Walls of houses, churches or synagogues, shops and workshops, walls of defence and walls of separation. Between these walls life grows, new things are invented and discovered, people are born and others die. Between walls, people live. When people decide to leave their walls and to try their luck somewhere else, their stories remain. Thanks to them, history goes on and we do not forget what happened before we appeared in the world. Stories keep people alive and walls standing, even past their time. When even stories disappear, nothing is left. Only then, when there’s nobody to tell the stories, everything ends. We wanted to tell the story of Jews in Sibiu - they came, settled down, built, lived, resisted and then moved on. What is left behind them are walls, but mostly stories. We put some of them together and we invite you to take this story forward.

Route: Sibiu - Transfagarasan Road - Carta - Avrig - Sibiu Meeting place: in front at your hotel at 10:00 a.m. Highlights:  Enjoy the landscapes offered by the Transfagasaran Road  Admire Balea area, with its beautiful waterfall and lake  Visit Carta Abbey and the beautiful palace and garden in Avrig Program: Explore the Transfagarasan, the highest altitude pass road of Sibiu, the glacial Balea Lake, the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Carta, and the Baroque style palace and garden in Avrig, on this full-day private tour. The Transfagarasan mountain road (or national road 7C) is one of the most spectacular roads in the world. Located in Romania, it runs trough the Fagaras mountains, and has more tunnels and viaducts than any other road in Romania. Initially a modest wooden building, skilled stone masons from France built the true Gothic construction later known as The Cistercian Abbey from Cârţa. In fact, the new church played an inspirational role in the architecture of the future fortified churches from Transylvania. In spite of the decay, the monument has kept its impressive architecture: capitals, keystones, windows and consoles and even the 15th century western portal. Today the church is frequented by the evangelical community of Cârţa. Via the Transfăgărăşan road through a breathtakingly majestic landscape, Balea area is perfect as a start-up point for various mountain trails in the Făgăraş Mountains, where you can enjoy the diversity of its flora and fauna. The Bâlea area is crossed by the Bâlea River which forms a picturesque waterfall. The journey to Balea Lake will most certainly be one to remember! The Brukenthal is a stately palace from 1788, formerly used as the summer residence of Transylvanian Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. Visitors to the historic Brukenthal Palace can enjoy the Baroque architecture and the large landscaped palace park. Please note: This trip can be booked also during the winter season, excepting the hiking part from Balea Waterfall to Balea Lake (to get to Balea Lake it is necessary to take the cable car). EUR 6,00/ person = supplement for entrance fee to the Fortified Church in Carta and Buckental Palace in Avrig The price is available for minimum 2 persons
