About

The manor, as well as the whole village, belonged to the Apafi noble family. In the 18th century, when they had no more heirs, the manor has been taken over by the Bethlen noble family. Throughout time, the Apafi house has been changing its shape and was several times renovated in 1830 the owner of the time, Graf Haller. In 1920 the manor was transfered to the Saxon community, then transformed into the cultural house of the village, then seized by communists in 1949.

After discovering in the archives of the Hungarian state several detailed inventories that marked the changes brought to the Mâlâncrav estate between 1679 and 1778, German architect Jan Hulsemann and contractors Fritz Klutsch and Ernst Linzing brought the manor back to its original 18th century aspect, using traditional techniques and materials. Once the architecture and finishes were restored, British designer David Mlinaric was in charge of the interior design, respecting the same spirit: most of the objects inside the rooms of the manor – weave work, lace work, furniture pieces and ironware – are of local provenience, either originally found inside the manor, or brought from the nearby villages.

The church itself was built without any tower in the 14th century, in gothic manner. Around 1500, the village takes defensive measures, and builds the massive donjon where the southern entrance used to be. The top of the donjon is still used today as a bacon storage. Originally, the village was a subservient community; however, in 1318 it already got the status of a free village on Crown Land. A three-aisled Gothic basilica with pillar arcades was built in the 14th century and dedicated to Saint Catherine. The buttress-supported choir has a 5/8 apse and a cross-ribbed vault. Both the chancel arch and the arches between the nave and the aisles have Gothic profiling. Today the nave and the aisles display a flat ceiling. The three-storey stone bell tower stands in the west wing of the church. Its basement storey forms a porch before the actual church hall. The west portal profiled jambs display a leaf-decorated capital frieze. The choir has five Gothic traceried windows and it was heightened during the early 16th century fortification work that the church was submitted to. It was strengthened by a defence storey standing on raised buttresses and was equipped with loopholes and corbelled brattices. The bell tower got an additional defence storey and a truss-frame-supported wall-walk. A second tower was built 11m before the west tower. In between, there is the fountain court surrounded by 14m-high walls. There is a wall-walk on raised brick arches along the inner side of the wall. In 1825, the outer tower got its present-day spire roof. The church was surrounded by a double enclosing wall, and strengthened by a semicircular tower in the north and by a tower with a single-pitched roof in the east.  More information can be found on Agramonia.

The church itself was built in gothic architecture in the 14th century. Its tall choir, is one of the things that make it particular. It's almost as tall as the bell tower / donjon. In case of an attack or siege in the renaissance, the church could have been defended on every single front. It's known as one of the most characteristic churchcastles in the region.  More information can be found on Agramonia.

The Romanesque basilica was built in the 13th century. Although most parts of the church were replaced over the centuries, there is still some reminiscence of this long for-gone time, like the western entrance, which is still in original shape. The bell tower was built alongside the church, but higher and improved to a donjon in the 1500s. Today, the massive bell tower / donjon looks a bit out of proportion compared to the church itself.  More information can be found on Agramonia.

Since the Transylvanian Saxons were granted the territory of today's southern Transylvania by the Hungarian King Géza II in the 12th century, they were exposed to hostile attacks from the east. To protect the villagers from these dangers, the churches were fortified over the centuries. The uniqueness of fortified churches lies in the fact that, unlike medieval castles, they did not belong to the nobility but served as communal projects for the defense and protection of the village community. Even today, the diverse fortifications of these churches stand as impressive witnesses of that era.
