Text provided by the exhibition curator:

The collection of far-eastern decorative art found today in the Brukenthal National Museum in Sibiu is due to a military doctor, Dr. Eugen Worell (1884-1961), who worked at the Military Hospital in Sibiu and who, at the beginning of the 20th century, helped to combat of a pneumonic plague outbreak in Manchuria and Mongolia. On this occasion, Dr. E. Worell, formed a valuable and exhaustive collection of decorative art, bringing together various objects of Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese provenance, dating back from the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The collection contains a number of 117 pieces, with a classic thematic structure, used in the great European museums that have this profile and that base their heritage on collections made at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The art pieces are related to spiritual and religious life, that of secular customs, decorative pieces for the enjoyment of the living space, as well as pieces that highlight the human person by emphasizing certain details of clothing and hairstyle, but also pieces related to the military field. The collection was offered to the Brukenthal National Museum in 1964 by the wife of the collector, Mrs. Maria Worell.

The emphasis in making this exhibition was placed on those pieces that have not been exposed to the public before, of great historical and aesthetic value, many of them unique in Romania. Embark on this journey with us to discover the values that have guided the extreme oriental art for centuries in regions so little known to us, such as Tibet, China, Japan, etc.!
