The exhibition presents many types of 19th-20th c. carpets woven in different regions of Azerbaijan and preserved within the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum’s collection.
Carpet is integral to Azerbaijani culture and performs both utilitarian and aesthetic functions. Since ancient times, the local population has widely used flat-woven and pile carpets woven of naturally dyed yarns. Azerbaijanis wove carpets to decorate walls and cover the floors of their tents and dwellings. They used these textiles to design clothes, the trappings of pack animals, and bags for transportation. On the occasion of the exhibtion’s opening, the organizers offer (especially to 5-12 years old children) the opportunity to take part at a carpet weaving workshop.
The exhibition comprises a tactile display of small examples of Azerbaijani carpets designed and woven by the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum’s Traditional Technologies Department. Its interactive display engages visitors of all ages and enables visually-impaired persons to experience a variety of techniques and feel the ornaments’ shapes.
